Sega making mini Mega Drive having CD games

Sega has revealed a sequel to its miniature Mega Drive (otherwise understood as the Sega Genesis). This one will feature cartridge games and titles from the Mega CD add-on.

In addition, the slim console will feature 50 built-in games, including the tastes of Silpheed, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Shining Force CD, Virtua Racing, and Shining in the Darkness. It scrutinizes like the mini console craze isn’t over quite yet.

Unfortunately, the device has only been announced for Japan; it’s expected to embark on October 27th for 9,980 yen (about $75).

Miniature retro consoles were all the craze a few years ago, following the blockbuster hit of the NES mini in 2016. Nintendo observed that up with a tiny SNES, and Sony built a less-than-stellar take on the authentic PlayStation. Nevertheless, while Sega was a bit late to the play, it released arguably the best mini console to date with its earlier Mega Drive / Genesis in 2019.

Sega is promoting a ‘new project’ next week, which may be a mini console. Counting that Hiroyuki Miyazaki and Yosuke Okunari will emerge as part of the stream, the tweet asks: “Does that mean?” along with an image of a chocolate cake shaped like a Mega Drive / Genesis controller.

Miyazaki – and Okunari in particular – indicates the announcement may be a new mini console because both revealed the Mega Drive Mini at a Japanese Sega carnival in 2019.

Okunari is a producer at Sega and has worked almost exclusively on retro re-releases for the company, including the Sega Ages 2500 series on PS2, the Sega 3D Classics series on 3DS, and the Sega Ages series on Nintendo Switch.

He was also the contents lead for the Sega Mega Drive Mini console, released in 2019. Miyazaki, meanwhile, is an executive manager at Sega and has worked on a broader range of products, but most newly was the project lead on the Mega Drive Mini.

In discussion with Famitsu magazine following the Japan-only getaway of the Game Gear Mini, Okunari said he desired the next project to deliver more powerful global potential hardware.

“I think we may proceed with a concept close to the Mega Drive Mini for the next one,” he said. “If I have to tell some names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini.”

Sega is assigned to relive some of its past credits with another retro console. The company has revealed the Mega Drive Mini 2. While the system has only been approved for Japan, for now, it seems likely Sega will obtain it for other needs as well. If and when it docks in the US, it’ll presumably be called the Genesis Mini 2.

The Mega Drive Mini 2 will have Sega CD games in its lineup of 50 titles. The complete list hasn’t been disclosed, but it contains Virtua Racing, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and Shining Force CD. In addition, it features Fantasy Zone, which was never unleashed on Mega Drive/Genesis — it was an arcade title that was anchored on Master System. Finally, it’s worth mentioning the library may be different in other nations.

Sega states all of the games have been sincerely reproduced. So you’ll be able to hold your improvement at any point too.

The company will unleash the Mega Drive Mini 2 in Japan on October 27th. It will cost ¥9,980 (almost $75). Sega also creates a cosmetic attachment that appears like a smaller version of the Sega CD accessory. Using an included spacer, you can mount the original Mega Drive Mini slightly larger than its successor. The Sega CD attachment will cost ¥4,500 (roughly $37).

We were big fans of the original Genesis Mini, which Sega released in 2019. It had a solid selection of adeptly emulated games and USB ports that permitted users to plug in alternate controllers. Fingers crossed, Sega comprises the six-button version of its controller when it inevitably offers the Mega Drive Mini 2 outside of Japan.
